Image Title: The Apothecary

Scripture Reference:

Description: The apothecary, wearing a Japon coat, prepares a medicinal potion over a charcoal stove outside his shop; a topiary tree in a ceramic urn has been placed on the outside ledge of his shop. Two warmly dressed women walk on the sidewalk. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 103:2-5.

Motto:
A potion of Christ’s blood
Is precious for the heart.

Poem:
As the shop of medicine
Is for bodily malady and illness,
So exists, for all who desire salvation,
While they are afflicted by pain of the soul,
A richly prepared shop,
That is called the Word of the Lord.
