Image Title: The Oil Presser

Scripture Reference:

Description: The oil presser fills a small barrel with oil through a funnel, while a woman next to him watches. In the right background, a workman operates the oil press; a woman stands at the counter near the open door through which a street scene is visible. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Matthew 25:1-12.

Motto:
Press oil from the heart,
That feeds the light of piety.

Poem:
The olive tree of eternal life
Has in the deadly pressure
Given out beautiful oil,
To the benefit of the lamp of souls;
So that its fire drinks that balsam,
And shines eternally before God’s countenance.
