Image Title: The Order for the Suspension, Reconciliation, Deposition, Dispensation, Degradation and Restitution of Those in Holy Orders

Description: This engraving is the last of three illustrating various rites for those under holy orders. This engraving illustrates the rite of degradation. The bishop who is being degraded, kneels before the presiding bishop, who announces to all present the cause of his fellow bishop being removed from office. He then removes the signs of office: the pallium, the mitre, the power to preach, the bishop’s ring and so on. A similar rite is performed for degraded priests, deacons, subdeacons and the other orders leading to priesthood.
