Author: Catholic Church

Image Title: Ordination to the Major Order of Subdeacon

Description: This engraving illustrates ordination to the first of the three major orders: the subdiaconate, the fifth of seven ordinations culminating in full priesthood. The bishop, seated on his throne, offers a chalice and paten to the ordainee kneeling before him. Another priest, wearing a cope, offers a small tray with two cruets containing water and wine to another ordainee. Each of the ordainees holds in his arms the tunic that is the particular vestment of the subdiaconate. After this ordination, the subdeacon is permitted to read the Epistle during the celebration of the Mass.
