Image Title: Portrait of Martin Luther

Description: Portrait of Martin Luther (1483-1546), a German priest, pastor, theologian, and reformer. Engraved by Hendrik Hondius (b. 1573), whose initial is at the upper right. The caption in Latin says, “Rome subdued the world with her arms; the Pope conquered for himself with his deceit. How much greater is Luther, he who this one (Rome) and that one (the Pope) with one pen.” This image is from Jacobus Verheiden’s (fl 1590-1618) 1602 book containing 50 portraits of Protestant Theologians who fought against the Catholic Church .
