Image Title: First Lutheran Hymnal

Description: “Achtliederbuch” (Eight Hymns) is the first church hymnal. Jobst Gutknecht (d. 1542), a Nuremberg printer, gathered eight broadside hymns into one collection. Four hymns are by Martin Luther (1483-1546), three are by Paul Speratus (1484-1551), and one is anonymous. Gutknecht created this title-page border from four separate panels. Unfortunately he placed the bottom panel upside-down and omitted an 'x' in the date of publication (1514 instead of 1524). This woodcut border is by Erhard Schon (1491-1542) .
