Image Title: Historiated Title-Page Border

Description: This historiated title-page border is based on the Gotha version of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s painting, “Law and Gospel” (or “Sin and Redemption”). The tree at the center is dead on the left but alive on the right, representing Law and Gospel, respectively, and on the side of each is a cluster of illustrative images. The woodcut is dated 1552 (lower right).
