Image Title: Luke the Evangelist
Description: As the evangelist Luke composes his gospel account, his attribute the ox before him, he gazes to a vision of the crucifixion of Jesus in the distance. A painter’s easel and palate are in the corner, reminding the viewer that Luke is the patron saint of artists. The artist, Virgil Solis (1514-1562), has placed his monogram in the lower right corner of the woodcut. In addition there is the engraver’s knife and the numeral 11.
