Author: Erasmus, Desiderius, d. 1536
Image Title: John Writes His Gospel
Description: A stylized rendering of John composing his gospel while having a vision of the incarnation and being accompanied by an eagle. The eagle symbolizes John's gospel, drawing on Ezekiel 1:10, which refers to four creatures, each of which was associated by Irenaeus (d. 220) with one of the four New Testament gospels. This woodcut is also used in the 1536 "Zurich Bible" and is based on the design of Hans Holbein.
