Description: Abeel was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He entered the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick in 1823 and was licensed to preach in 1826. At the beginning of his ministry he served as a pastor in Athens, New York. He became connected with the Seaman’s Friend Society and the A.B.C.F.M. and sailed to Canton in 1830 and then to other places in the Far East as a minister and to gather information for the A.B.C.F.M. to use in planning future missionary work. In 1834 he returned to America for a time and then went back to Canton in 1839. Worn out from his labors, he returned to America in 1845 and died the following year.
