Description: This emblem depicts a person holding his or her heart in fear as an angel hammers a nail into it. The image is titled with the Latin COMPUNCTIO CORDIS CLAVO TIMORIS DEI, which translates “the heart pierced with the nail of God’s fear,” and is accompanied by the text of Isaiah 41:7. This is the forty-sixth in a series of 47 emblems published anonymously and adapted from Benedictine writer Benedict van Haeften's Schola Cordis (1629).
