Description: This emblem depicts Eve in the Garden of Eden offering up her heart as the serpent slithers down from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil to poison it. The image is titled with the Latin CONTAGIO CORDIS that translates to “infection of the heart” and accompanied by the text of Acts 5:3. This is the first in a series of 47 emblems published anonymously and adapted from Benedictine writer Benedict van Haeften's Schola Cordis (1629).
