Image Title: One Who Tames
Description: This emblem depicts a woman sitting beneath a tree taming a unicorn that bows at her feet. The Latin phrase UNA DOMAT, which translates "One Who Tames," titles the ornamental frame. This allegory of the Incarnation in which a unicorn trapped by a maiden representing the Virgin Mary was popularized by the didactic Christian text “Physiologus” (c. Second Century AD). This emblem is one in a series of 46 published by Cardinal Celestino Sfondrati confirming the Immaculate Conception in nature.
