Image Title: Sacred Root
Description: This emblem depicts a landscape featuring a palm tree growing by a winding stream. The ornamental frame is flanked by two cranes and is titled with the Latin motto RADIX SANCTA, which translates "sacred root," referring to the Virgin Mary, who has been compared to the RADIX SANCTA since at least the twelfth century in the Marian liturgical hymn, Ave regina caelorum (‘Hail, Queen of Heaven’). This emblem is one in a series of 46 published by Cardinal Celestino Sfondrati confirming the Immaculate Conception in nature.
