Scripture Reference:

Description: The top image is labeled POCULUM ZELOTYPIAE, or “The Cup of Jealousy,” and depicts the Jewish ritual set forth in Tracate SOTAH addressing a woman suspected of adultery undergoing the “ordeal of bitter water” or the “ordeal of jealousy” in the courtyard at the East Gate of the Temple. As prescribed in Numbers 5:31, the accused woman has been stripped of her clothes and forced to drink a mixture of dirt and water as the High Priest and crowds look on for a sign of judgment. The bottom left image shows the SEPULTURA JUDAEORUM, or “Jewish Burial.” Two pallbearers carry a casket draped in a specially prepared cloth called a pall. A crowd behind the pallbearers observes the progression toward an elevated cemetery marked with a skull and crossbones over the archway at the entrance. The bottom right image labeled CIRCUMCISIO depicts a traditional Jewish circumcision known as the BRIT as prescribed in Leviticus 12:22. One man holds the eight day old infant while another performs the surgery as several others look on from behind.
