Forgetting One’s Country

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Forgetting One’s Country

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features the mythical Greek hero Odysseus and his men eating from the fruit of the lotus tree on a non-descript island after having been driven off their course to Ithaca by the north winds. The succulence of the tree’s fruit was so potent that his men’s eating of it caused them to relinquish their desire to return home. The subscriptio draws a parallel between the intoxicating effect of this fruit and those who forget their homeland after having taken up residence in Rome.
