Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features a shield hanging from a tree. It is embossed with the figure of a swan, a sacred bird to Phoebus, the Roman god of music and poetry. For this reason, the emblematist recommends the shield as a fitting coat of arms for poets.
