On Sudden Terror

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: On Sudden Terror

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features Faunus, in Roman mythology the god of the forest, plains, and fields, sounding a horn, which implies that the epigrammatist equates him with Pan, the half-goat rustic god accredited with the invention of the horn or military trumpet and unexplained terrors seizing man and beast, especially on the battlefield and in wild lonely places. The question Faunus poses in the epigram perhaps implies that the faltering of the troops can be attributed to cowardice rather than inexplicable panic.
