The Tomb of Giangaleazzo Visconti, First Duke of Milan

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: The Tomb of Giangaleazzo Visconti, First Duke of Milan

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features a map of northern-central Italy and a figure, presumably Giangaleazzo Visconti (1351-1402 CE), holding a snaking ribbon on which is written the Greek version of the Latin epigram that serves as this emblem’s subscriptio. The Greek epigram is concerned with what would be a worthy tomb for the Greek hero Themistocles, who was buried in a very simple grave. With this arrangement, the emblematist implies that a befitting memorial of Visconti’s personage and great exploits are worthy of comparable consideration.
