Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550
Image Title: By Counsel and Virtue, the Chimera Shall Be Overcome, Meaning the Powerful and Deceptive
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features the mythological Greek hero Bellerophon preparing to slay the dreaded monster Chimera, whose defeat would mean the completion of the task set for him by King Iobates of Lycia. Athena aided the hero with the carrying out of this task by telling him how to capture the winged horse Pegasus. The subscriptio appropriates this myth to teach the lesson that the reader can rise up to the heavens and tame proud monsters by the counsel of wisdom.
