Image Title: Good People Have Nothing to Fear from the Rich
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features the harpies as imagined by the Roman poet Virgil, comprised – Aello (“storm swift”), Ocypete (“the swift wing”), and Celaeno (“the dark”) – being driven out of the kingdom of Phineus by Zetes and Calais, the sons of the north wind in Greek mythology. The subscriptio treats of the harpies as representative of oppression by the wealthy elite and the creatures’ retreat as figuring integrity’s insusceptibility to their schemes.
