Image Title: One Scholar Should Not Malign Another

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features a swallow (here referred to as Procne, which alludes to the legend of the Athenian princess Procne’s transformation into a swallow) with a cicada in her mouth as she flies to her nest built in a ruin. The subscriptio calls the swallow’s capture of the cicada a cruelty, as they are both melodious singers, and identifies as the greatest sin the destruction of one devoted to the Muses by the tooth of a fellow devotee.
