Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) figures a much-translated ancient Greek epigram dealing with the subject of a swallow that built her nest on a representation of Medea, the legendary woman who, in the eponymous play by Euripedes, slew her children by the mythological hero Jason, leader of the Argonauts, to avenge his unfaithfulness. The epigram regards the swallow’s action as foolish, given the nature of Medea’s infamy.
