On Those Who Harbor Murderers

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: On Those Who Harbor Murderers

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) portrays the mythical Theban hero Actaeon being attacked by his own hunting dogs, having been transformed into a stag by the goddess Artemis for making trespass against her. The subscriptio draws an analogy between the fate of Actaeon and that of Scaeva, a name that means “evil-minded” but does not refer to a particular figure: the evil-minded will be betrayed by their associates similar to the way Actaeon was betrayed by his own hunting dogs.
