Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features statues of the goddess of hope and the goddess of retribution standing next to each other, the former holding aloft her broken bow, the latter her scales. The subscriptio treats of their proximity as representative of the moral prohibition of hoping for the illicit.
