On Death and Love

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: On Death and Love

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features Hermes and Hades, the gods of love and death, respectively. Both being blind, they each strike the other’s target, death striking a youth with his arrow of bone, love an old man with his arrow of gold. Ironically, the one who should be passing out of life has thus been reinvigorated with the passions of love, while the youth, who should be enjoying the delights of love, suffers a deathlike pining.
