Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.
Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550
Image Title: On Reckless People
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features Phaethon driving the chariot of his father, Apollo, daring to guide the fire-breathing steeds of the sun. After spreading great fires over the earth as a result of his recklessness, the youth fell from the car and plunged to his death. In the subscriptio, the author likens the fate of young, brash kings to that of Phaethon. Driven by imprudent ambition, they bring disaster on their subjects and finally pay the penalty for their crimes.
