Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550
Image Title: One Must Never Yield under Questioning
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features a proud lioness upon the fortress of Ceropes. She represents the heroic courtesan Leaena, mistress of Aristogeiton, one of the two principle conspirators in the plot to assassinate the tyranny of Hippias and Hipparchus at Athens. Though Hipparchus was murdered, the plot was ultimately defeated with Leaena being captured in the process. She never divulged her knowledge of the plot, in spite of being tortured to death. The Athenians later erected a bronze statue of a lioness in her honor.
