Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.
Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550
Image Title: On the Senate of a Good Prince
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features allegorical sculptures of a prince surrounded by members of his senate. The princely figure is deprived of sight, a loss that gains him the ability to judge impartially. They are seated because the author thinks lawgivers should be of calm mind, not disturbed in spirit. The senators have no hands so that they may not accept bribes.
