Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features hares plucking out the whiskers belonging to a lion’s corpse, a scene alluding to the mythological hero Hector’s last words to his slayer, Achilles, inviting him to tear him apart, as even cowardly hares pluck the whiskers of the lion after it has been deprived of life.
