Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: The Firmest Cannot Be Uprooted

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features an oak tree standing in an open field, bare of all foliage. In the subscriptio, the author likens this tree to Emperor Charles V’s Europe. Though winds may bang together the tree’s dry leaves, the tree remains firmly rooted. Similarly, though the Turks had invaded along the Danube and won the Battle of Mohacs, Alciato contends that Charles V’s empire will remain unmoved.
