Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a large beetle flying toward an eagle, a scene alluding to Aesop’s fable “The Dung Beetle and the Eagle,” in which the dung beetle destroys an eagle’s nest in order to avenge the death of his friend the hare, whom the eagle has killed, in spite of the beetle’s protestations.
