Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a fox holding a skillfully shaped actor’s mask, which he stole from the workshop of a stage-manager. The mask is so uncanny that it merely lacked breath to make it come alive. The fox marvels that such a head could have no brain, an indictment of those who value appearance over intelligence.
