Misfortune Is Always at Hand

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Misfortune Is Always at Hand

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features three young women of the same age casting lots to see who would be the first to die. The one for whom the dice rolled laughed at the omen with contempt but soon died when the roof collapsed on her. The subscriptio makes the claim that a bad omen cannot be eluded, no matter if one enjoys good fortune or bad.
