Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Against Those Who Praise What Is Not Praiseworthy

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features an elephant a tree bearing a suit of armor. The subscriptio takes this scene as an allusion to the victory of Antiochus over the Galatians. Though his forces were vastly outnumbered, he managed to defeat the Galatians through the use of a few elephants. After the victory, he had the image of an elephant painted on his trophies, thus giving praise to what the author considers an unpraiseworthy animal for an unpraiseworthy victory.
