Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Hope Is Near

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Milanese jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a ship caught in the middle of a storm at sea. In the subsciptio, the ship represents the Milanese republic embroiled in tumultuous conflict. But the appearance of the constellation Gemini above the ship gives hope that the ship will find its way, using its position in the heavens as a guide. This particular constellation is significant, as it figures the brothers and mythological heroes Castor and Pollus, who aided in the Roman victory at the Battle of Lake Regillius, fighting at the head of the Roman army, according to legend.
