Against Those Who Love Whores

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Against Those Who Love Whores

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a fisherman dressed in the skin of a hairy she-goat; standing on the riverbank, he tricks a bream-fish, which was thought to be unable to resist the smell of she-goats. The subscriptio interprets this scene allegorically: the bream resembles the lover who wretchedly perishes as a result of his unwholesome love.
