Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features the Greek mythological hero Prometheus suffering the punishment inflicted on him by the gods: day after day, he must suffer an eagle tearing open his chest and ripping apart his liver. In the subscriptio, the author draws an analogy between this story and prudent men who, endeavoring to uncover the plans of powers too great for them to understand, have their breast tormented by various worries.
