Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features Roman officers grasping one another’s hands in a sign of alliance. The subscriptio treats the handshake as the symbol of concord, for when Rome was embroiled in civil war, soldiers of a region would come together and make such a gesture as a sign of goodwill .
