Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.
Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550
Image Title: Steadfast under Pressure
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a boy in the boughs of a palm tree. The subscriptio interprets this scene as a lesson in steadfastness under pressure. It claims that the palm-tree lifts itself higher the greater it is burdened by its wealth of sumptuous berries and dates. Thus the struggle to reach the canopy is analogous to the ascent of the mind to greater heights of knowledge: the higher it climbs, the greater the reward.
