Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: The Prince Who Attends to the Security of His Subjects

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a dolphin wrapped around an anchor. The subscriptio draws a didactic analogy between this figure and a king’s responsibility to his people. Traditionally understood to be devoted to humans, the dolphin fixes itself to the anchor in order to secure it more surely. What this figure means to sailors, a king should mean to his own people.
