Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a kingfisher delicately weaving a nest out of wheat stalks and grape leaves on an outcrop of rock in anticipation of the birth of her offspring. The subscriptio interprets this scene as a lesson to kings, that if they imitate the care with which these birds provide for their young, the year will be fruitful in wheat and wine.
