Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciati (1492 – 1550 CE) features a man stranded on a small outcrop of land in the middle of a large body of water. He sits idly on a bushel-box, a container once used to store a bushel of corn. This scene figures the saying quoted in various ancient sources that likened sitting on a bushel-box to idleness. The man sits on the container, content with the day’s provision, but fails to care for the needs of tomorrow.
