Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features a Roman military banner on which one finds the mythological Minotaur that Dedalus imprisoned within the labyrinth of Cnossos with its hidden entrance and shadowy darkness. In the subscriptio, Alciato draws the lesson that the secret dealings of leaders should remain so, lest their plans are thrown back on them.
