Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE), which he dedicated to Milan Maximilian Sforza (1491 – 1530 CE), Duke of Milan, features a lute resting atop a cushioned stand. In the subscriptio, Alciato draws an analogy between the tuning of the instrument’s strings and the formation of federations among the Italian nobility and admonishes the duke to handle these political relations with care, lest discord break out.
