Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Milan

Book Title: Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs.

Author: Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550

Image Title: Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Milan

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Italian jurist and writer Andrea Alciato (1492 – 1550 CE) features the coat of arms of the House of Visconti, which ruled Milan from 1277 – 1447 CE, resting against a tree, its heraldic charge displaying in argent the Biscione, a serpent in the act of either consuming or giving birth to a human. The subscriptio expresses puzzlement as to whether the Biscione should be interpreted as a symbol of Alexander the Great’s divine lineage or of the birth of Pallas from the head of Jupiter.
