Book Title: The archæology of baptism / by Wolfred Nelson Cote.
Author: Cote, Wolfred Nelson, d. 1877
Image Title: Font at Darenth Church
Description: This baptismal font, found in the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Darenth, Kent, England, comes from around the twelfth century. The font’s exterior features a series of arch-enclosed figures, which are examined in full below the image of the font. The figures represent: a king holding his staff; a bearded merman; a crowned figure, perhaps King David, playing a harp; a sagittarius; a couple of animal-like monsters, and another beaten by a man; and people baptizing an infant. The engraver, William Dickes (1815-1892), has placed his monogram in the bottom right of the woodcut.
