Description: This sketch of a fresco in the catacomb of San Ponziano, Rome, depicts the baptism of Jesus. Jesus stands upright in a narrow body of water, as John the Baptist (right), ashore, places his hand on Jesus’ head. A dove flies overhead, blowing its breath into Jesus’ hair; a small deer ambles up to the left shoreline, staring into the water; and an angel hovers atop a cloud above the deer, holding a towel.
