Description: The room sketched in this image, located in the catacomb of San Ponziano, contains a rectangular baptismal font in the floor which connects to an outside stream. In the alcove above the font, an ornate painting of a cross graces the wall. Above the alcove is a painting of John the Baptist (right) baptizing Jesus, who stands in a basin filled with water up to the hips. A dove flies overhead, a small deer ambles up to the basin, and an angel hovers over the deer, holding Jesus’ robe. The engraver, William Dickes (1815-1892), has placed his signature in the bottom left corner of the woodcut.
