Description: Two men look out over the fields. In the distance a farmer is plowing; nearer them are a cow resting, several sheep grazing, and a grove of trees. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649–1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and composed the poem that accompanies it. The etching was executed by Jan Luiken or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708), who had used this image in an earlier work, which may be found in the Digital Image Archive under the call number 1699Weig. The attendant scripture text is John 4:35.
Motto: Clear evidence, From Paradise.
Poem:
What message does the Summer bring,
With its unlocked charms,
That blossom so joyfully,
And give the human life reason,
For broad homage and praise?
Does it not brilliantly proclaim,
In this Paradise-like garden of joy,
An eternal growing and blossoming being?
That Being, of which the Hero battling,
While opening those blessed doors,
Has said on Golgotha,
What would happen to those believers.
That Pleasure garden in which one lives eternally,
Of which the life of the Apostles,
Bears witness to the World,
Since the vision was given to them.
Should the human heart here be inclined,
To shade and beautiful gardens,
Think then what it must be.
What is beyond the earthly mind!
O Pleasant Summer-time,
How very happy are the ears,
That listen thoughtfully and attentively,
To what thou didst say about the roots!
So that one seeks the Blessed valley,
Where it will be eternally summer.
